Operational guide for the death.box XRP toolkit.

WARNINGRead Safety First before doing anything else. This toolkit uses the real XRP Ledger Mainnet and real money.

What this toolkit does

death.box lets you leave XRP and instructions for someone you trust, without any company, app, or server standing between you and them. Everything happens in your browser and on the public XRP Ledger.

  1. Wallet — creates an address you control
  2. Memo — leaves an encrypted note for your beneficiary
  3. Escrow — locks real XRP so it becomes available after a set time

You do the setup. Your beneficiary only needs the tool, an address, and a passphrase you give them separately — no account or signup.

Safety First

  • This is real money (Mainnet). Nothing here is a test or simulation.
  • A seed controls all funds on that address. Anyone who sees it can take everything. Never share it, screenshot it, save it to cloud storage, or paste it into another website.
  • This page remembers nothing. Reloading or closing the tab removes everything generated here.
  • Write seeds and passphrases on paper, not in a notes app, cloud-synced password manager, or photo.
  • If a field says “seed” or “passphrase”, triple-check you are on this exact tool before typing it in.

Part 1 — Create a Wallet

This wallet is only meant to carry the encrypted memo. Keep it light — send exactly 1.2 XRP to meet the current activation reserve, plus a small amount for transaction fees. Do not send large amounts here; that is what Escrow is for.

Steps

  1. Open the toolkit and go to the Wallet tab.
  2. Click Generate wallet.
  3. Write down the Address (public) and Seed (secret) on paper.
  4. Send exactly 1.2 XRP to the address so the account meets the current activation reserve; keep a small extra balance for transaction fees.
  5. Do not close the tab yet — you will use this same wallet in Part 2.

Checkpoint: You should have an activated address with a small XRP balance and its seed written down safely.

Part 2 — Leave an Encrypted Memo

This step writes down, in encrypted form, who your beneficiary is and any message you want to leave them. It is permanently posted to the public ledger, but nobody can read it without your passphrase.

2a. Encrypt and post the memo

  1. Go to Memo → Encrypt & Post.
  2. If the generated wallet is no longer available after a reload or computer restart, enter its Wallet seed / recovery secret. The seed is used locally to sign the transaction and is never stored or uploaded.
  3. Enter the beneficiary’s XRP address and an optional message.
  4. Choose a long, hard-to-guess passphrase and confirm it.
  5. Click Encrypt (preview). Nothing is sent yet.
  6. Review the scrambled preview, then click Send on-chain.
  7. Note the Tx hash or Explorer link for your records.

The memo payment sends 1 drop to the beneficiary address and also requires the normal XRPL transaction fee. The beneficiary address must be different from the sending wallet.

Very important: Write the passphrase down somewhere your beneficiary, will, or lawyer can access after you are gone. If it is lost, the memo is unreadable forever.

2b. How your beneficiary reads it later

Give them the toolkit link, the beneficiary wallet address used in the memo, and the passphrase through separate safe channels. The sender wallet address is not needed.

  1. Go to Memo → Load & Decrypt.
  2. Enter the beneficiary wallet address and click Load memos.
  3. Select the relevant memo, enter the passphrase, and click Decrypt.
  4. The beneficiary address and message appear in plain text.

Part 3 — Lock Real Value with Escrow

Use a separate wallet for actual inheritance value. You lock XRP until a fixed Finish After date. From that date, the beneficiary can claim it. After a later Cancel After date, you can reclaim it if nobody claims it. These dates cannot be changed or cancelled early.

3a. Create the escrow

  1. Go to Escrow → Create.
  2. Enter the seed of the wallet holding the funds, beneficiary address, amount, and both month values.
  3. Click Create escrow.
  4. Write down the Owner address, Sequence number, and both dates shown in the result.

3b. Beneficiary claims it

  1. Open Escrow → Claim after Finish After has passed.
  2. Enter the beneficiary’s seed, Owner address, and Sequence.
  3. Click Claim escrow.

3c. Reclaim after Cancel After

  1. Open Escrow → Reclaim after Cancel After has passed.
  2. Enter your seed, Owner address, and Sequence.
  3. Click Reclaim escrow.

Glossary

Address
Public identifier, safe to share, starts with r.
Seed
Private key controlling funds, starts with s. Never share it.
Passphrase
Password used to encrypt the memo; unrelated to the seed.
Mainnet
The real XRP Ledger and real money.
Escrow
XRP locked on the ledger with a built-in release date.
Sequence
Number identifying the escrow transaction.
